CHEO – Child and Youth Mental Health – Research Grants

Purpose: The grants support research of direct relevance to child and youth (0-18 years) mental health in Ontario.

Priority Areas: The Centre funds high quality, applied research and is primarily interested in funding outcomes-based research. Areas of special interest: integration of child and youth mental health; systematic reviews; youth engagement in child and youth mental health; uptake of evidence-based practice; child and youth mental helath care indicators and outcome measurement.

Eligibility: Collaborative partnerships must be established between university-base agencies and community-based agencies.

Amount of award: maximum of $75,000 a year for up to 2 years.

Deadlines:
Faculty of Education Dean’s Office: 1 week prior to agency deadline (2-3 weeks prior if you would like feedback on your proposal)
Research Development: 3 days prior to agency deadline

International Funding Opportunities – A Variety of Recent Announcements

1. DFAIT - The Bank of Missions and Cultural Exchange grants are being adminstered by DFAIT.

Typically, the program pays for the least-expensive airfare to the destination. Applicants are eligible to receive a maximum airfare of $2000 CAD to Asia and $1500 CAD to Europe and Latin America (exception is given to those residing in isolated areas, such as the three Territories and Arctic Canada). The cultural exchange program will fund only one person per project/event. Furthermore, successful applicants can only receive one grant per two years. In order to effectively use the limited funds of the program by focussing its resources to specific geographical areas, Foreign Affairs Canada has given funding priority to the following destinations: members of the G8 (France, Germany, United Kingdom, United States, Italy, Russia, and Japan) as well as the People’s Republic of China, Brasil, India, Mexico and South   Africa.

2.   The Foreign Government Awards (FGA) Program – (Awards available to Canadians for graduate study abroad) is administered by the Canadian Bureau of International Education (CBIE) on behalf of the Canadian Government. “As part of the implementation of cultural agreements with the Government of Canada, the governments of Chile, Colombia, Germany, Korea, Mexico, the Philippines, and Russia, The governments of  Italy, Japan, the Netherlands and Spain also offer awards to Canadian students, however, the embassies of these countries in Canada are responsible for the administration of their scholarships.

3.  The Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute is pleased to announce the 2008-2009 India Studies Fellowship Competition. The Institute invites applications from Canadian scholars, librarians, graduate students and artists for research, training or study in
India during the 2008-2009 academic year. Research areas sponsored by the Institute include the social sciences, humanities, law, business, economic reform, globalization, information management, science and technology, biotechnology and agriculture.

5.  IRELAND CANADA UNIVERSITY FOUNDATION
These awards are designed principally for young scholars and academics who are currently engaged at graduate level research in a discipline which is, or has potential to be, related to both Ireland and Canada, or who are commencing such research.
All academic disciplines are eligible.

6.  NATO grants
Applications are made by individual scientists – to be eligible for consideration, an application for a grant must be submitted jointly by a person from a NATO country and a person from either a Partner country or a Mediterranean Dialogue country.

Applications may be submitted at any time, although upcoming deadlines for submission of applications have been set as follows:

With the exception of applied research and development projects (“Science for Peace”), NATO will inform applicants about the decision on applications about 6 months after the deadline. For Science for Peace projects, the final decision will be made following a two-step evaluation procedure that normally takes one year from the deadline.

Ontario Research and Education Summit

The Drummond Foundation – Quality of Life Grants

The Drummond Foundation invites applications from clinical investigators working in Canada and interested in improving the quality of life of socially, mentally, or physically disadvantaged elderly individuals and their families. Studies concerning community dwelling seniors with compromised autonomy will be favored.

Amount: maximum $50,000 over one year

Science and Technology Equipment Exhibition

Western’s Purchasing Office is hosting a Science and Technology Equipment Exhibition for the research community on May 14th from 10 am to 3 pm at the University of Western Ontario, Somerville House, the Great Hall conference room.

This forum is designed specifically to enable the researchers, whether PIs or lab technicians, to meet with a wide range of equipment suppliers, share their needs and find out where supplier’s are heading with their next releases. The forum itself will be supplemented with lecture room information sessions that specific suppliers are running to profile their equipment for researchers.

Canadian Education Statistics Council: Request for Proposals

The Canadian Education Statistics Council (CESC), a partnership between the Council of Ministers of Education, Canada (CMEC) and Statistics Canada, is inviting proposals for the development of a report on pan-Canadian education data and the preparation of a draft strategic plan for the provision of pan-Canadian education data for the next decade. The successful candidate will be expected to conduct consultations with all ministries/ departments of education, Statistics Canada, and other education stakeholders in developing the strategic plan. Proposals should address elementary-secondary and postsecondary education data in
Canada.
