CIHR – Operating Grants

The CIHR Operating Grant Program (OGP) provides operating funds to support research proposals in all areas of health research. If your program of research is in the health area, you may be eligible for funding from CIHR.

Deadlines:
Faculty of Education Dean’s Office: One week prior to the RW deadline.
Research Western (RW): September 6 (for mailing by RW), September 11 (you are responsible for mailing)
CIHR – Letter of Intent: August 15, 2007  (Letters of Intent are Mandatory)
           – Full Application: September 17, 2007

Guggenheim Foundation

The Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation (HFG) welcomes proposals from any of the natural and social sciences and the humanities that promise to increase understanding of the causes, manifestations, and control of violence, aggression, and dominance. The Foundation places priority on the study of urgent problems of violence and aggression in the modern world and also encourages related research projects in neuroscience, genetics, animal behavior, the social sciences, history, criminology, and the humanities.

Deadlines: 
Faculty of Education Dean’s Office: At least 1 week prior to agency deadline (2-3 weeks if you wish to receive feedback on your application – submit to Karen Kueneman)
Research Western: no less than 3 days prior to agency deadline.
HFG Foundation: August 1 2007 (for a decision in December)

Value: $15,000-$30,000 US (for up to 2 years)

Research Priorities: Particular questions that interest the foundation concern violence, aggression, and dominance in relation to social change, the socialization of children, intergroup conflict, interstate warfare, crime, family relationships, and investigations of the control of aggression and violence.

Transatlantic Workshop on Curriculum Internationalization in Social Sciences & Humanities

The John F. Kennedy Institute of the Freie Universitaet Berlin and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) jointly announce a call for participation in the 3rd International Transatlantic Degree Programs Project (TDP) Workshop:

Of Roadmaps and Crossroads: Transatlantic Perspectives on Advancing Internationalization in Social Sciences and Humanities

The workshop will take place in Toronto, Canada, September 28-30, 2007.

It will serve to explore issues relating specifically to curriculum internationalization in social sciences and humanities, with a particular focus on transatlantic student and faculty mobility and joint and double degree programs. The 3rd TDP Workshop is part of the “Transatlantic Degree Programs Project” (TDP) which examines the current status and future prospects of joint and double degree programs between German and North American universities. The workshops invite administrators, faculty and internationalization experts from the US, Canada and Germany to discuss innovative concepts in transatlantic curriculum integration and to examine successful examples in higher education cooperation between North America and Europe.The Toronto workshop will be held in cooperation with The Joint Initiative in German and European Studies at the University of Toronto and the Canadian Centre for German and European Studies at the Université de Montréal.Application deadline for participants from the US and Canada is July 20,2007.

SSHRC – Image, Text, Sound & Technology – Summer Institute, Workshop and Conference Grants

The application form and instructions for SSHRC’s Image, Text, Sound & Technology (ITST) fund are not yet available, but if you are interested in this opportunity, you should begin preparations.

Research Western: no less than 3 days prior to agency deadline.
SSHRC: September 17, 2007 (for a decision in January 2008)

Value: Up to $50,000 for up to 1 year

Description: The program will provide funding for researchers and their graduate students to develop expertise in applying advanced technology through summer institutes, workshops and conferences.
Funds may be requested for the planning and implementation of events that bring together appropriate academic and government or industry researchers to exchange knowledge about the use of technology in ITST research. This includes Canadian and international scholars and experts.
Summer Institutes are intensive, one- to two-week, interactive seminars that introduce researchers and students to cutting-edge ITST technologies and skills.
Workshops, of two to five days’ duration, concentrate on the elaboration and sharing of innovative technological methodologies being developed for use in ITST research.
Conferences provide venues for ITST researchers to present their research methodologies and results to a range of users and potential users from the academic, public, private and voluntary sectors.
Possible topics and areas to be addressed include electronic editing and publishing; e-literature; Web programming; immersive and virtual environments in multimedia research; textual analysis; 3 -D imaging technology; creativity, culture, and computing; digital image design; information aesthetics; computer gaming; knowledge transfer of research results to fellow researchers, decision makers and the public at large.

Description: This program enables researchers to learn about and apply advanced technologies to the analysis of social statistics at university-based Research Data Centres across the country. Similarly, the ITST program will help researchers refine their ability to apply digital multimedia technologies to their research on image, text and sound.

The overall objectives of the ITST program are to 1) reflect on, interpret, and analyze new digital media, multimedia, and text-based computing technologies and integrate these into humanities and social sciences research; 2) bring together theorists, experimentalists, and technologists from different disciplines, to share and nurture ideas and methods that challenge research to advance through the use of audio-visual and text-based technologies; 3) facilitate the creation of national and international networks of, and partnerships among, researchers, industries, governments, and individuals that will promote and sustain social sciences and humanities research and resources worldwide.
The specific objectives of ITST Research Grants are to support projects that 1) employ innovative technological tools in image, text and sound to make social sciences and humanities research more efficient, effective and comprehensive;  2) devise new and creative applications for technology that offer valuable models that can be applied specifically to research in the social sciences and humanities.

SSHRC: September 13, 2007 (for a decision in December 2007)

Value:
Development Grants – Up to $25,000 for up to 1 year
Project Grants – Up to $75,000 for up to 1 year

Description: The International Opportunities Fund offers important opportunities to advance Canadian research and promote it internationally; supports collaborative research activities that further the goals of SSHRC’s international policy and strategy; and enables researchers to take advantage of international collaborative opportunities in a timely and flexible manner.

Development Grants support developmental activities—such as workshops, seminars, and planning meetings—that are expected to lead to significant international collaboration;

Project Grants help secure Canadian participation or leadership in current or planned international research initiatives or networks.

NOTE: The program is not intended to support activities that can be funded through other available SSHRC programs.

SSHRC – Notification of Intent to Apply (NOI)

Application forms and instructions for the new SSHRC procedure for the Standard Research Grants program, are now available at this web page

You will need a SSHRC User ID and Password to use the Notification of Intent to Apply (NOI) form. If you have previously applied for SSHRC funding, you will already have these.

The form is submitted electronically.  No hard copies are required.

While the submission of this form is NOT mandatory, applicants are strongly encouraged to complete and submit it before the August 15, 2007 deadline.

This new step will allow SSHRC to start some aspects of the competition process (e.g., selection of appropriate external assessors) before the formal application deadline.

Please note that the NOI will not be used as part of the adjudication of the formal application.  Applicants and teams are therefore permitted to change their proposal between the NOI and formal stages
