The Faculty of Education’s Conference Travel Awards are to support faculty members in their research by providing the opportunity to attend conferences to present their research work and to benefit from interactions with other researchers.
Amount: $1,200 (maximum)
Deadline: (Associate Dean’s Office) March 2, 2009, 4:00 p.m.
Eligibility:Applicants must be tenured or probationary faculty members of the Faculty of Education. A faculty member may apply once to each of the Conference Travel Grant competitions. Pending availability of funds, those who present at more than one conference in a given year (May 1- April 30) may be considered for additional funding as long as the total for all conferences does not exceed the above maximum.
Timing of Conference: There are no restrictions as to when the conference must occur. However, retroactive requests for conferences occurring prior to the application date for a particular competition will receive a lower priority.
Forms must be accompanied by a completed RDAF.

The University of Western Ontario Academic Development Fund (ADF) New Research and Scholarly Initiatives Award, Small Grants Competition applications and instructions are not yet available but if you are planning to apply you should begin preparations soon.
Deadlines:
Faculty of Education Assoc Dean’s Office: March 2, 2009 (if you wish feedback on your application please submit 2-3 weeks early to Karen Kueneman)
University Secretariat: March 16, 2009
Value: $8,500 maximum (for up to 2 years)
Description: The ADF’s Small Grants Competition supports the cost of research projects of modest scope. Applications may be made for new research initiatives. Preference will be given to applications that offer a clear rationale for the proposed research, exhibit innovation, and contain a budget explaining fully how the money requested will be spent. In addition, preference will be given to those faculty members striving to get programs of research established and to those who, during the past three years, have not received funds through the SSHRC Internal Research competitions or the Academic Development Fund (ADF).
Eligibility: Researchers in all disciplines are eligible. At the time of application, the principal applicant must be a regular, full-time faculty member at Western OR be a Professor Emeritus at Western with a casual appointment at the rank of Adjunct Research Professor – Independent Research Required.
Full Applications are to be accompanied by a completed RDAF form (bearing applicant and Assoc. Dean Signatures).

NOTE: Applications must be submitted electronically in pdf format to the Secretariat’s Office. The Major Collaborative Research Initiatives (MCRI) program supports leading edge research with true potential for intellectual breakthrough that addresses broad and critical issues of intellectual, social, economic and cultural significance through the effective coordination and integration of diverse research activities and research results.
Deadlines:
Faculty of Education – Assoc. Dean Research: no less than one week prior to agency deadline (2-3 weeks prior if you want feedback on your application – consult with Karen Kueneman)
UWO Internal – Research Development Services: no less than 3 days prior to agency deadline.
SSHRC: Stage 1 (Letter of Intent) – January 31, 2009 (for a decision end of April)
Stage 2 (Formal application – by invitation only) – September 1, 2009 (decision Dec 31)
Value:
Stage 1: Up to $20,000 over 8 months
Stage 2: Minimum $100,000 and up to 2.5 million over 7 years.
Description: The MCRI program seeks to support research with a strong analytical component, research of such significance and quality that it brings international recognition to the team, involves appropriate partners and stakeholders and produces results that will have a major impact on Canadian scholarship and society.
Objectives are to:

support leading edge, collaborative research that meets high standards of excellence, promises a significant contribution to the advancement and transfer of knowledge in the humanities and social sciences, and encourages discussion and debate from a broad perspective on critical issues of intellectual, social, economic and cultural significance for Canadian scholarship and society;
- promote broadly based collaborative research as the central mode of research activity—both within and among disciplines, departments, and faculties as well as with other sciences at universities across the country and abroad;
- promote the development of active partnerships with private or public sector groups to ensure their participation in the design and conduct of the research project and in the dissemination of research results;
- promote the development of links with appropriate stakeholders;
- provide unique opportunities for training students and postdoctoral fellows in a collaborative, interdisciplinary research environment;
- support research that achieves integrated and comprehensive syntheses of the issues under study;
- encourage dynamic and innovative approaches to disseminating research findings that will have a major impact on Canadian scholarship and society by reaching both traditional and new audiences, including Canadian and international scholars, policy makers, stakeholders and the general public;
- involve postsecondary institutions in long-term commitments to the development of unique, large-scale inter-postsecondary institution research initiatives.
Eligibility: The program is intended for leading scholars with solid track records and past experience in collaborative research, student training and grant management, and who demonstrate the leadership and other skills necessary for managing a complex, interdisciplinary, multi-institutional project. The project director must be eligible to hold a research account at UWO.
Note:
• The research team must represent a minimum of two Canadian postsecondary institutions (including the Canadian host institution), and must include sufficient members to cover the diverse perspectives and expertise required by the breadth of the research questions outlined in the proposal. The team may include co-applicants (co-investigators) and collaborators in accordance with SSHRC definitions.

CIHR Operating Grant Program (OGP) provides operating funds to support research proposals in all areas of health research. If your program of research is in the health area, you may be eligible for funding from CIHR.
