Faculty of Education – Internal Conference Travel

February 11, 2010

The Faculty of Education, UWO announces a  request for proposals for its Internal Conference Travel program for the next fiscal year (conferences occurring after May 1, 2010). Pending budgetary approval, $50,000 will be available for faculty members to attend conferences -  up to $25,000  will be awarded in this competition and the remainder will be awarded in the October 1 competition.

Deadline: March 1, 2010, 4:00 p.m. (for a decision by April 1, 2010)
(The next deadline will be Oct0ber 1, 2010.)

Amount: Expenses for conference trips may be reimbursed to a maximum of $3,700 for tenured and probationary faculty members per fiscal year (i.e., May 1 – April 30) for attending up to two conferences.  Pending availability of funds, faculty members may apply to attend:

1) an international conference (maximum $2500); and/or

2) a local or international conference ($1200) in each fiscal year.

If funds are available, the committee may consider requests in excess of $2,500 for travel to more expensive international conferences.

Description: The purpose of these conference travel funds is to help to support the research function of the Faculty.  These funds are intended to support faculty members in their research by providing the opportunity to attend conferences to present their research work and to benefit from interactions with other researchers.

Eligibility: The fund is restricted to faculty members within the Faculty of Education. Part-time or seconded faculty are not eligible to apply.

NOTES: Faculty members must be presenting a paper at the conference.

Shirley R. Steinberg is the co-founder and director of The Paulo and Nita Freire International Project for Critical Pedagogy. At present, she teaches at McGill University.  She is the author and editor of many books in critical pedagogy, urban and youth culture, and cultural studies.  Her most recent books include:  Teaching Against Islamophobia (2010); 19 Urban Questions:  Teaching in the City (2010); Christotainment:  Selling Jesus Through Popular Culture (2009); Diversity and Multiculturalism:  A Reader (2009); Media Literacy:  A Reader (2007); the award winning Contemporary Youth Culture:  An International Encyclopedia; Kinderculture:  The Corporate Construction of Childhood (2010, 2004); and The Miseducation of the West:  How Schools and Media Distort Our Understanding of the Islam World (2004).  She is currently finishing two books:  Writing and Publishing (Fall 2010) and The Bricolage and Qualitative Research (Fall 2010).  A regular contributor to CBC Radio One, CTV, The Toronto Globe and Mail, The Montreal Gazette, and Canadian Press, she is an internationally known speaker and teacher.  She is also the founding editor of Taboo:  The Journal of Culture and Education, and the Managing Editor of The International Journal of Critical Pedagogy.  The organizer of The Baeza Congress, she is committed to a global community of transformative educators and community workers engaged in radical love, social justice, and the situating of power within social and cultural contexts.

Information Session – Research on Teaching & Fellowship in Teaching Innovation

February 3, 2010

An information session on the Western Research on Teaching Small Grants program and the Fellowship in Teaching Innovation will be held on Thursday, February 11, 2010, at 1:30 pm in the Teaching Support Centre, room 122 in Weldon Library.  This session is designed for researchers preparing applications for either of these programs in the current cycle, as well as for researchers who are contemplating applying to these programs in the future.

The Fellowship in Teaching Innovation is a program sponsored by the Teaching Support Centre and The Western Research on Teaching program is conducted by Research Western.  As these two programs both focus on the area of responsibility in teaching, the information session will help to clarify the mandates of each program. Academic Development Fund – Small Grant Competition

The University of Western Ontario Academic Development Fund (ADF) New Research and Scholarly Initiatives Award, Small Grants Competition applications and instructions are now not yet available but if you are planning to apply you should begin preparations soon.

Deadlines:
Faculty of Education Assoc Dean’s Office: March 1, 2010 (if you wish feedback on your application please submit 2-3 weeks early to Karen Kueneman)
University Secretariat: March 15, 2010

Value: $8,500 maximum (for up to 2 years)

Description: The ADF’s Small Grants Competition supports the cost of research projects of modest scope. Applications may be made for new research initiatives. Preference will be given to applications that offer a clear rationale for the proposed research, exhibit innovation, and contain a budget explaining fully how the money requested will be spent. In addition, preference will be given to those faculty members striving to get programs of research established and to those who, during the past three years, have not received funds through the SSHRC Internal Research competitions or the Academic Development Fund (ADF).

Eligibility: Researchers in all disciplines are eligible. At the time of application, the principal applicant must be a regular, full-time faculty member at Western OR be a Professor Emeritus at Western with a casual appointment at the rank of Adjunct Research Professor – Independent Research Required.

Full Applications are to be accompanied by a completed ROLA proposal.
