For most of the twentieth century, many teachers deemed to be Communists or fellow travellers were kept under surveillance by Canada’s national security services. Using specific examples drawn from a number of provinces to illustrate the types of political activities that created difficulties for teachers, this talk offers an exploratory examination of the ways in which the surveillance of Canadian teachers was conducted and identifies approaches used by state authorities to discipline educators who were suspect.
