With deadlines approaching for major CIHR competitions, I would like to assure you that CIHR remains committed to supporting applicants in completing and submitting their CCVs as part of their applications to CIHR. Although significant CCV improvements have been made in response to your feedback, we recognize that there is still more work to be done to improve the CCV and its usability. Therefore, CIHR will continue to be flexible in accepting all types of contributions as attachments for the upcoming competitions, and remains committed to working with applicants to address other issues as they arise while completing their CCVs.
In addition, I would like to inform you that CCV is putting in place some formal structures to inform CCV improvements based on the feedback received from the community. These formal structures include an advisory board comprised of CCV member agencies (including CIHR) and a user group that will include representation from CIHR’s research community to ensure that the perspectives of the research community are taken fully into consideration as we move forward with further CCV improvements.
Finally, recent CCV enhancements have been implemented effective January 16, 2013. These enhancements were technically feasible to implement in advance of the upcoming major competition deadlines. Other enhancements that are more complex will be made in the coming months and we will be sure to inform you about them when they are implemented.
Below you will find guidelines and instructions to assist applicants to upcoming competitions as well as more details on the CCV advisory board and user group and on the recent CCV enhancements.

GUIDELINES FOR APPLICANTS TO CIHR’S UPCOMING COMPETITIONS
The following are some guidelines to help you focus your efforts on completing only those elements of the CCV which are necessary for application to the upcoming competitions.
• Use the CIHR Funding CVs (not the Generic CV). Select the appropriate Funding CV for CIHR (Registration CV, Academic CV or Knowledge User CV). This will limit the amount of information you must enter to only that required by CIHR. It is neither necessary nor desirable to enter data in the Generic CV.
• For the Registration deadline, only the “Registration CV” is required. This short CV requires completion of two CCV sections: Personal Information and User Profile.
• “Contributions” may be submitted as attachments, as in the past. Please note that this includes the full range of “contributions” (e.g., publications, presentations, interviews and media relations, intellectual property, etc.).
• Contributions information is required for the last five years only for most grant programs, including the Open Operating Grants Program.
• Applicants are encouraged to complete their CCVs as early as possible, allowing additional time to familiarize themselves with the new system and its additional data requirements.
In addition, a “CCV Help” button is available from the CIHR homepage, http://www.cihr-irsc.gc.ca/e/193.html. Click on “CCV Help” to access all information on the CCV for CIHR, including previous updates, training links, an FAQ and additional resources.
Applicants who are having difficulty converting their CCV or are experiencing other challenges with respect to the new system are advised to actively contact CIHR staff in advance of the deadline to seek assistance. Our Help Desk and programs staff will be on duty until 8:00 p.m. ET on the deadline date of major competitions (for example, the February 1, 2013 Fellowships application deadline and the March 1, 2013 Open Operating Grants application deadline).

FORMAL STRUCTURES TO INFORM CCV IMPROVEMENTS
CIHR and CCV are continuing to work towards further improving the CCV and its usability. To this end, CCV has created an advisory board comprising all CCV member agencies, including CIHR. The role of the advisory board is to provide advice and feedback on the CCV directions, policies and services and how these might impact the research community. In addition, it will provide feedback to CCV on planning, implementation and evaluation of the CCV and advice on the prioritization of enhancements. It will also serve as a formal mechanism to exchange ideas and concerns related to CCV services.
In addition, CCV will create a user group to act as an advisory body representing the research community’s perspectives on CCV application functionality. The responsibilities of the user group will be to:
• Provide feedback on the usability of the application
• Participate in User Acceptance testing of major functionality changes
• Serve as a formal mechanism to exchange ideas and concerns related to the CCV
• Serve as a vehicle for communicating to the research community about the CCV

RECENT CCV ENHANCEMENTS
The following enhancements are effective January 16, 2013:
Enhancements to the CCV
• Enhanced help text has been added throughout the CCV application. For more details, please see the “Release Notes” section of the CCV home page, https://ccv-cvc.ca/indexresearcher-eng.frm.
Enhancements to the CIHR Funding Templates
• Research classification entries (research disciplines, areas of research, fields of application and research specialization keywords) can now be ordered within the following sections:
– User Profile
– Credentials (research disciplines only; Academic and Knowledge User CVs only)
– Recognitions (research disciplines only; Academic and Knowledge User CVs only)
• In the Activities section, ongoing activities which began earlier than 5 years ago can now be entered for the following subsections. Applicants can now enter any start date and must enter an end date within the last five years. For ongoing activities, the end date should be left blank.
– Community and Volunteer Activities
– Knowledge Translation Activities
– International Collaboration Activities
– Committee Memberships (Knowledge User CV only)
– Other Memberships (Knowledge User CV only)
• In the Contributions section, under Conference Publications and Presentations, applicants now have the option to indicate that they were invited to deliver a presentation.
• A PubMed section is now included within the Knowledge User CV.
• In the Degrees section, applicants can now indicate that they have transferred to a PhD program without completing a Master’s program.
