Designing and Administering Effective Interviews for Research on Teaching: A Session for Beginners

In this interactive session, participants will discuss the basics of interviewing from a Research on Teaching (RT) perspective. Issues that will be discussed include approaches to interviewing (e.g., qualitative & quantitative frameworks), types of interviews (e.g., structured, semi-structured, focus groups), ethical concerns with interviewing as a method in RT projects, and writing and asking effective interview questions.

Shrinking levels of funding call for creative thinking in finding support for research. This session’s focus is on the broader scope of programs outside the three government Councils. At Western there are Internal Grant opportunities that are especially important for new faculty. The panel will also discuss ways to locate and benefit from the many varied programs and research sponsors outside the University.
