Spencer Foundation

The  Spencer Foundation was established in 1962 by Lyle M. Spencer. The Foundation is intended to investigate ways in which education, broadly conceived, can be improved around the world. The Foundation has been dedicated to the belief that research is necessary to the improvement in education. The Foundation is thus committed to supporting high-quality investigation of education through its research programs and to strengthening and renewing the educational research community through its fellowship and training programs and related activities.

Small Grants (under $50,000)

Deadlines:

Description: The Foundation’s  Small research grants are organized under four areas of inquiry that identify broad topics they believe have fundamental and abiding importance for educational improvement.

The New Civics
Philosophy in Educational Policy and Practice (PEPP)

Deadlines:
Faculty of Education Research Office: At least 1 week before the Agency Deadline (2-3 weeks earlier if you wish feedback on your application – submit to Karen Kueneman)
Research Development & Services: At least 3 days before the Agency Deadline
Spencer (2014 dates): no deadlines for PEPP, various for New Civics

Amount:   under $40,000 for PEPP; from less than $40,000 to $350,000 for New Civics

Lyle Spencer Research Awards

Description:The Spencer Foundation has introduced a new grant program, The Lyle Spencer Research Awards: Advancing Understanding of Education Practice and Its Improvement . This program is the successor to their long-standing field-initiated major grant program, which was phased out in early 2014. With this program, they aim to reinforce their commitment to intellectually ambitious research, oriented ultimately to improving the practice of education, and independent of any particular reform agendas or methodological strictures.

Deadlines:
Faculty of Education Research Office: At least 1 week before the Agency Deadline (2-3 weeks earlier if you wish feedback on your application – submit to Karen Kueneman)
Research Development & Services: At least 3 days before the Agency Deadline
Spencer (Letter of Intent 2014): June 12  (If successful- Essay Due Early August 2014; If that is successful- Full Application due January 7, 2015)

Amount: up to $1 million

Eligibility for All Programs:Principal Investigators applying for a Research Grant must be affiliated with a school district, a college or university, a research facility, or a cultural institution. The Foundation accepts proposals from institutions and/or researchers from the U.S. and internationally. Researchers must also have an earned doctorate in an academic discipline or professional field or appropriate experience in an education-related profession.
