Over the past year or so, Western has been engaged in developing a solution to create and facilitate web-based surveys for researchers and other members of the University community.
Qualtrics has been chosen as the solution and its selection is intended to mitigate concerns about U.S. information access policies and the concerns typically raised by Research Ethics about where data resides. The solution is web-based and the product is hosted out of Ireland. While Western retains autonomy over access (using our own credentials) and information within this hosted solution, it should be noted that due to the fact that information will reside on servers outside of our own data centre, this platform may not solve all data residency questions as it relates to survey information-gathering. There may still be requirements to have covered – these items would be discussed case by case through Research Ethics and any other related units at the University.
The platform resembles other survey environments such as FluidSurveys and Survey Monkey and replaces the aged internal Western survey system.
This platform would be useful as a research instrument, a polling technology, and even as a voting technology for Faculty Council, etc.
