Amount: $70,000 (2 years release time from teaching and administrative work)

Description: These awards, which are administered by the Canada Council for the Arts, provide support to scholars of exceptional ability who are engaged in research projects of broad significance and widespread interest. Killam Research Fellowships are intended for established scholars who have demonstrated outstanding research ability and who have published the results of their research in substantial publications in their field. Typically, the recipient of a Killam Research Fellowship is a full professor in a Canadian university.

The fellowships provide two years of release time from teaching and administrative duties to individual scholars who wish to pursue independent research. The fellowships are awarded to individuals, but the funds are paid to and administered by universities or research institutes.

More Information: When you submit your application to the Canada Council, an electronic copy will automatically be sent to your institution for its approval. (Without your institution’s approval, which must be received on or before 15 May 2012, your application will not be eligible.) Your institution may have special requirements and an internal deadline before the Canada Council’s deadline. Contact your institution well in advance to determine its process and deadline for reviewing and approving your application. Before you begin the process of preparing your application, you will need a Killam user name, password and agency PIN. Your submission is not complete until you receive confirmation of your electronic submission from the Canada Council, receive your institution?s approval and submit your supporting documents. You may submit your supporting documents by regular mail if you wish, but the package must be postmarked no later than 15 May 2012. If you submit them by courier, the courier slip must be dated no later than 15 May 2012.

International scholars Dr. Rodney Hopson and Dr. Christine Sleeter will visit Western to discuss equity in education. In April 2009, Ontario’s Equity and Inclusive Education Strategy was launched to help the education community identify discriminatory biases, remove systematic barriers, and support the achievements and well being of students. Today, equity and engagement in education has never been more relevant for Ontario teachers and administrators.

Faculty of Education – Internal Travel Competition

The Faculty of Education announces a request for proposals for its Internal Conference Travel program.

Deadline: March 1, 2012, 4:00 p.m. (for a decision by April 1, 2012)

Amount: Expenses for conference trips may be reimbursed to a maximum of $3,700 for tenured and probationary faculty members per fiscal year (i.e., May 1 – April 30) for attending up to two conferences.  Pending availability of funds, faculty members may apply to attend:

1) an international conference (maximum $2500); and/or

2) a local (in Canada) or international conference ($1200) in each fiscal year.

If funds are available, the committee may consider requests in excess of $2,500 for travel to more expensive international conferences.

Description: The purpose of these conference travel funds is to help to support the research function of the Faculty.  These funds are intended to support faculty members in their research by providing the opportunity to attend conferences to present their research work and to benefit from interactions with other researchers.

Eligibility: The fund is restricted to faculty members within the Faculty of Education. Retired, part-time or seconded faculty are not eligible to apply.

NOTES: For this competition the conference must occur after May 1, 2012. Faculty members must be presenting a paper at the conference.

New Tri-Council Policy: Consent to Disclosure of Personal Information

Please note the new Tri-Council policy on Consent to Disclosure of Personal Information, which was implemented November 17, 2011 under the Tri-Agency Framework: Responsible Conduct of Research (http://www.rcr.ethics.gc.ca/eng/policy-politique/framework-cadre/).

All researchers applying for CIHR, NSERC or SSHRC awards will be required to consent to this new policy. If an applicant refuses to agree with the Consent to Disclosure of Personal Information, the application will not be accepted by the agency. Should an individual participating in a group application refuse to agree to the consent, the application would have to be submitted without the name and participation of said individual.
